Nature Kids

The past few weeks we have been going to the back to nature space with an open mind, clip boards, and pencils. Children have the opportunity to explore the environment and make representations of what they see. As they manipulate their pencils they are demonstrating basic knowledge and skills gained through exposure to visual arts. Further, they are linking the art experience with scientific inquiry skills. The children are making connections to with their prior knowledge and new contexts to make sense of the world around them.

As the children are sketching, they are demonstrating an awareness for respecting the natural world and the need to care for the environment. Children are tracing leaves that have fallen from trees and comparing the sizes. Other children are sketching the paths and formations of branches and logs in the space. Children sit and draw without disrupting the natural world around them. Their eyes and minds are open to learning as they use a focused exploration time to represent and making connections within the natural world.
